Social Security Disability in Illinois: Applying for Benefits, Choosing a Lawyer and Office Locations.

Below is some information on choosing lawyers and applying for Social Security Disability in Illinois.  I have also included the address of each Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) that serves IL.

One thing to remember is that what you have to prove to get disability and the laws SSA follows are the same in every state.  On this page I will provide some general information as well as addresses and locations of different Social Security Administration offices.

You can apply in IL for SSDI on-line, at a local office or by mail.  SSI on the other hand must be done in person at local office.  The local offices are located in the towns listed under each ODAR office Address below.  To apply on-line go to SSA website.  The Social Security Administrations phone number is 1-800-772-1213.

When deciding what attorney to use in your disability case there are a few things you want to look for.  First, does the lawyer handle many Social Security Disability cases.  There are many lawyers who will take on a ssdi or ssi case but do they have the experience and knowledge needed to give you the best chance to win.  This kind of case can be extremely complicated for someone who has not handled many cases.  Second, speak to the attorney or representative you are considering and decide if you are comfortable with that person.  Be careful of those that promise to win your case or who boast about their winning percentage.  Every case is different and no one can predict what SSA may do in a given case.  A good representative will tell you upfront if you have a strong case that may not require a lawyer.

If you are looking for a lawyer we handle cases nationwide.  If you prefer a local attorney we can help you find one.  Just click link below and note your preference.

May 2009 Update:  As part of the effort to reduce the wait time to get a hearing, Social Security has opened two new National Hearing Centers with the goal of helping to reduce the backlogs across the country. Later this year there is plans to open a new National Hearing Center in Chicago, IL. Since this is a National Hearing Center and not a regular hearing office, I do not know if there will be any emphasis on cases in Illinois or if this office will be strictly handling other areas across the country by video conference. I would have to guess, however, that because of its location it should have some impact on the ability to schedule more cases for the residents of IL. Hopefully, it will have a big impact on decreasing the amount of time residents of this state will have to wait for their Social Security disability hearing.
