Social Security Disability Information for Indiana

If you are applying for Social Security disability benefits in Indiana then you will find relevant information to your SSDI or SSI claim in IN including:  how your claim is handled, lawyers, hearings and addresses.

Under SSA law the definition of disability in this state and all states is the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s) which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.

How to Apply for SSDI in IN and How Claims are Handled.

You can apply for Social Security Disability benefits in Indiana by calling SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or apply on-line at the SSA website.  When you apply for benefits at your local SSA Field office this office will verify non-medical eligibility requirements for your SSD or SSI claim. They will then send your case to the disability determination process also called DDS. The DDS is an Indiana state agency funded by the federal government. The DDS will make a determination of whether or not you are disabled under SSA rules. After this agency makes a determination they will then send the case back to the Social Security field office to pay the benefits if they found you disabled or to wait for an appeal from you if your disability claim was denied. If you appeal this decision it goes through the same process again and this is called the reconsideration stage. If you are denied at reconsideration and you appeal then you request a hearing. After you request a hearing your case will then be sent to a hearing office also called the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review or ODAR. The wait time to get a hearing can be extremely long and you can find how long it is taking at each individual hearing office below. While your case is at the hearing office your claim is further processed and you may be sent for an additional medical exam or two.  Your SSD hearing will be held in front of an Administrative Law Judge or ALJ who will make a new decision on your claim after he has reviewed the evidence in the file and the testimony at the hearing.  To get a detailed understanding of SSA law and tips on how to win your case read my entire Ultimate Social Security Disability Guide.
